What is CBD Isolate? Part Two - CBD Isolate, Explained

In a previous post, we got to the bottom of what full spectrum CBD is and how it functions. Next, let’s talk about its—less active—counterpart: CBD isolate.

In short, CBD isolate is a more refined compound derived from the same hemp plant as full-spectrum CBD. There’s one slight twist: it doesn’t contain any traces of THC—the mind-altering element found in minute amounts in full-spectrum products.

The Extraction Process

The main process used to extract CBD compounds from the cannabis plant involves using a hydrocarbon or ethanol solvent (i.e. butane or propane) to strip the plant from other substances until all that’s left is CBD in pure crystal form. These crystals are then ground into powder, making it easy to consume and implement in products.

One special thing about the isolate compound is that it actually comes from a specific strain called cannabis sativa. This plant differs greatly from the generally familiar marijuana plant and carries less than 0.3 percent of THC. Some growers can harvest it legally across most of the U.S., as long as they adhere to strict regulations. The low THC count makes the extraction process easier for manufacturers as they can spare some of the manual labor that goes into stripping away the additional substances.

CBD in its Purest Form

CBD isolate is the most refined version of CBD. The method used to extract CBD from the cannabis sativa plant is what makes this compound the purest form of CBD. It doesn’t contain any other cannabinoids such as terpenes or flavonoids.

Lacking in any particular smell or taste, it can take on many forms such as powder, oil, or crystal. Its crystalline form makes it an easy dissolvent for vapors or liquids. Powder forms are usually easier to directly ingest.

Who is CBD Isolate For?

CBD isolate is ideal for those who want to try CBD products for the first time but may not desire the side effects of THC—the main, active ingredient in cannabis.

There are many products that contain the powder form of CBD isolate. The best varieties come in the form of oils, edibles, or liquids such as tea or coffee.
